Language and cultural exchange between Canada and Europe
I couldn’t have asked for a better experience on my exchange trip to France. My French family gave me a second home that I will never forget. I was welcomed as a member of the family and became so close to my French parents and brother, and of course it was so much fun to live with my exchange partner and best friend, Maylis. I feel so lucky to have met my host family and their extended family including aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents. They have all offered an open invitation to return to visit, which I hope to do someday.
School in France was definitely different. The school day started at 8:00 am and finished at 5:30 pm and the students always had lots of homework. I had so much fun getting to know my friends at school that I hope to keep in touch with for a long time. I even got to participate in the schools’ annual “Carnaval” where Maylis, our friends and I dressed up as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I was lucky enough to have another Canadian OSEF student from Edmonton at my school so we were able to bond in a way unlike any other. It was nice to have someone else who understood how different life was and overall it was amazing to share this experience with her.
It was so cool to wake up every morning and experience a new amazing culture firsthand. I learned a lot about myself on this exchange too. I had to learn to “go with the flow” and not be afraid to try new things. And I tried a lot of new things, however I had to draw line at eating pigs’ brain. This exchange also taught me that even though my French family and friends may live thousands of kilometers away from my home in Canada I can also feel at home in their beautiful country because the world is ours to discover.
